A CV layout that presents your work history and education starting with the most recent entry and working backward in time. Preferred by recruiters because it highlights recent achievements and career growth clearly.

In Plain English
Reverse-chronological order means listing your most recent job first and working backwards. Your current or last job goes at the top. Your first job goes at the bottom.
Why You Must Use It
Recruiters want to see what you are doing right now. They do not want to scroll to the bottom of the page to find your current role. This format puts your most relevant experience where it is seen first.
- It is the standard: Almost every employer expects this format. Using anything else makes your CV harder to read.
- It passes the scanners: Automated systems (ATS) are programmed to read CVs from newest to oldest. Other formats can cause errors in your application.
- It shows growth: It highlights how your responsibilities have increased over time.
Example
- Current Job: Warehouse Manager (2022–Present)
- Previous Job: Warehouse Operative (2019–2022)
- Oldest Job: Delivery Driver (2017–2019)
The same rule applies to education. List your most recent certificate or degree first.
When Not to Use It
This format is best for most people, but there are exceptions:
- Employment Gaps: If you have not worked for several years, this format highlights the gap immediately.
- Career Changes: If your recent jobs have nothing to do with the role you want now.
